With so many different diets being marketed to people these days, some of them definetly are just fads. People fall in love with the idea of these diets, but are they actually helping in a profound way?
Enter the Ketogenic diet, which is starting to show insane results for people with certain medical conditions, and even healthy adults looking to lose weight.
What conditions would this diet help?
The Ketogenic diet can be great if you are already healthy, but their has been tremendous promise for people managing their health; that is where most of this diet’s notoriety has come from.
Dom D’Agostino, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, and a senior research scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). Recently featured on the Joe Rogan Experience Episode #994, Dom explains, “Everything from polycistic ovary syndrome, to acne, to even rare genetic disorders like Angelman’s syndrome” are helped by the Ketogenic diet. Seizures caused by epilepsy are dramatically reduced harnessing this diet as well. With more than 200,000 cases of epilepsy per year, this could be a major solution. Keto for weight loss
By far the most popular application for the Keto diet is for losing some extra fat. This can be achieved through a few means; cutting carbs drastically, achieving ketosis, and having a calorie deficit.
It shouldn’t come as a shock that maintaining a calorie deficit is one of the most important parts of losing weight regardless of your diet. If your body burns more calories than you replace, then fat will be burnt as well. You must be careful, however, that the calories you are ingesting are nutritious and not empty.
What Does a Ketogenic Diet entail?
In short: This diet switches your primary fuel source from carbohydrates to fats and proteins. According to the Diet Doctor, the “keto” in Ketogenic Diet is because the whole goal is to make your body produce molecules called “ketones”. Your body usually uses glucose (carbs) to burn for energy. When you deplete your glucose levels, your body will instead turn to fats (ketones) instead.
To get your body ready to produce keytones, your diet must consist of very few carbs, and instead replacing them is mostly fat, followed with some protein. Striking the correct diet balance, your body will produce ketones for your brain to use as energy. When your body is producing ketones, its called ketosis. Foods that you would want to eat on this diet include:
– Fatty fish rich in Omega-3 (salmon, mackerel, sardines)
– Extra virgin olive oil
– Nuts and legumes
– Fatty cuts of meat
It can take a few months for your body to finally begin producing the correct results. No weight loss program will be an overnight solution. If you really have a goal of losing weight, stay focused and do not stray from your goal. Personally, I have a colleague who was able to lose 50 lbs in 6 months harnessing a low carb, keto-like diet. She said she has never felt better in her life.
The Ketogenic diet is still fairly new as far as the studies done on it. Currently, there are tons of evidence being presenting showing that this diet can not only help people with real medical problems, but also those looking for weight loss.
